NoCapWiki editorial explanation
1. What does it mean?
썰 is casual language for a story or account shared in conversation. It often frames an entertaining personal experience: 여행 썰 is a travel anecdote, and 썰 풀다 means to tell the story. 'Story time' can fit a playful post heading, while 'anecdote' fits an explanatory translation.
Also written or said as 썰 풀다, ssul, sseol, anecdote, story time
2. The nuance
썰 does not certify that the account is true or that the speaker witnessed it. '들은 썰' explicitly signals something they heard; '내가 겪은 썰' claims firsthand experience. Compare 뇌피셜, speculation from one's own head, and 오피셜, information presented as official: 썰 primarily labels storytelling, not the strength of evidence. Avoid translating every occurrence as 'rumor,' since a harmless personal mishap is also a 썰. With strangers or sensitive subjects, 이야기 or 경험담 is a more neutral choice.
3. Examples
“길을 잘못 들어서 전혀 다른 카페에 간 썰 풀어줄게.”
Let me tell you how I took the wrong turn and ended up at a completely different cafe.
“그건 내가 직접 본 게 아니라 친구한테 들은 썰이야.”
That's a story I heard from a friend, not something I saw myself.
