1. Three words describe three different things

An English discussion may use “fan” or “stan” for several different experiences. Korean gives you a useful distinction: 최애 identifies a favorite, 입덕 describes becoming a fan, and 덕질 describes the activity of following or enjoying the interest. They can all appear in one story without being synonyms.

Imagine that a performance catches your attention, you start following the group, and one member becomes your favorite. The turning point can be 입덕, the ongoing enjoyment can be 덕질, and the favorite can be 최애. You do not have to pass through these experiences in a fixed order or choose only one interest. The vocabulary describes the speaker’s experience rather than a membership process.

2. Translate 최애 as bias only where it fits

In idol fandom, “bias” can be a natural English equivalent for a favorite member. It is less helpful when the object is a song, a character, or a dish. 최애 곡 is a favorite song; 최애 메뉴 is a favorite dish. Before translating, identify both the object and the range of choices the speaker has in mind.

최애 is an established Sino-Korean word, not simply a recent abbreviation invented by fans. The National Institute of Korean Language notes its presence in the first edition of the Standard Korean Language Dictionary. That history does not prevent contemporary uses, but it does mean that a slang guide should not confuse current visibility with a verified invention date.

멤버 중에서는 지수가 최애고, 이번 앨범에서는 마지막 곡이 최애야.

Jisu is my favorite member, and the final track is my favorite on this album.

The same word names a favorite in two different sets. “Bias” may fit the member, but “favorite track” fits the song.

3. 입덕 names the start of an interest

입덕 can describe a memorable turning point or a gradual change from curiosity to wanting more. 입덕하다 often translates as “become a fan,” “get into,” or “get hooked on.” The event that prompted the interest might be a song, a live performance, a character, or a recommendation. It does not have to be buying a ticket or joining an official club.

An 입덕 계기 is the trigger or occasion that led the speaker into the interest. Treat that as a personal explanation, not a guarantee that everyone will react the same way. If a friend shares the scene that got them interested, you can ask what they liked rather than assuming it must be the performer’s appearance or one universally famous moment.

추천받은 라이브 영상을 보고 입덕했어. 목소리가 마음에 들더라.

I became a fan after watching a recommended live video. I liked the voice.

The sentence tells you both the turning point and what appealed to the speaker. It does not describe a formal registration.

4. 덕질 describes what you enjoy doing as a fan

덕질 can include watching performances, following releases, discussing a story, collecting items, or learning more about an interest. For a useful translation, name the activity when the sentence supplies it. “I watched band videos after work” can be more informative than replacing the entire experience with “I stanned.”

There is no spending requirement in the basic meaning. A person can enjoy a fandom without buying goods, attending an event, posting publicly, or choosing a favorite member. Do not treat the word as a test of who is a real fan. It also does not imply permission to intrude on someone’s private life; ordinary boundaries still apply to the activities you describe.

5. Interests can pause or change

Related expressions make another distinction: 휴덕 can describe taking a break from fan activity, while 탈덕 describes leaving the interest. A break in posting is not enough evidence to label somebody either way. If the distinction matters, use the person’s own account of what has changed.

취존 asks for respect for someone’s tastes. It is useful when friends choose different artists, genres, or ways of participating. You can understand a preference without sharing it. Similarly, 성덕 refers to a “successful fan” in the relevant story, but the label should not become a hierarchy that makes quieter or less-connected fans less legitimate.

6. Keep the person’s story in the translation

When translating a fan comment, ask three questions: What do they like most? When or how did the interest begin? What do they actually do with it now? Those questions prevent 최애, 입덕 and 덕질 from collapsing into a single vague label. Preserve the detail instead of adding intensity the original message does not contain.
